About The Story Game

Two writers. One story at a time.

How It Works

  1. 1
Create a story. Pick a genre, describe the setting, agree on up to three creative rules, and set a per-entry character limit so every segment stays tight and readable.
  2. 2
Invite a collaborator. You'll get a unique 8-character invite code. Share it with your writing partner — they enter it on their dashboard to join.
  3. 3
Take turns writing. You write a paragraph, then your partner writes the next. Back and forth, segment by segment, until the story is ready to end. While it's your partner's turn, you'll see a waiting indicator — just refresh to check for their latest entry.
  4. 4
Edit before they reply. Changed your mind about what you wrote? As long as your partner hasn't submitted their next entry, you can edit your last segment.
  5. 5
Wrap it up. When the story feels complete, either writer can propose ending it. The creator then gives the story its final title.
  6. 6
Go public. Finished stories appear in the public feed for anyone to read and react to.

The Honor System

When you create a story, you set up to three custom rules — things like "keep it under 100 words per turn" or "no flashbacks." These rules are shown to your collaborator before they join and are displayed throughout the writing session.

We rely on writers to follow the rules they agreed to. There's no automated enforcement — just mutual respect between collaborators.

Leaving a Story

Need to step away from a story mid-way? You can request to leave permanently — your partner will be notified and must approve the request. Once approved, your partner becomes the new story owner and can invite someone else to continue from where you left off.

Stories you've left will still appear on your dashboard as read-only archives.

Reactions

Readers can react to any entry in a published story — no account required. Eight reactions are available:
