Aiden stood at the edge of the animal trail that led deep into the Dark Woods. Flora stood next to him, the pretty dress she was wearing was already torn and ragged having been subjected to the natural lansdscape between the manor and this trailhead. Aiden glanced at her, weary but with admiration, holding her hand and more than a little nervous.
Flora turned and looked back at Aiden, a fierce determination in her eyes. "Aiden, my father and his servants will have the dogs out by now, we must go in now!"
Aiden nodded and brushed a few strands of her auburn hair from her face and then holding her cheek with the same hand.
"I know", he said, "Here, I've split the packs between us. You'll have everything you'll need."
With a deep breath, Flora squared her shoulders and stepped onto the narrow trail, the underbrush crackling beneath her feet as if the woods themselves were whispering secrets. Shadows danced between the trees, their gnarled branches twisting like the fingers of ancient giants who had long forgotten their purpose. The air grew thick with the scent of damp earth and moss, and an almost palpable tension prickled at the nape of Aiden's neck. He followed closely, trying to match her pace, his heart racing as the canopy above closed in, blotting out the fading light. Each rustle and distant call of unseen creatures sent his mind racing, but Flora pressed on, her resolve a beacon in the encroaching darkness.
Though they'd reached the woods while the sun was already up, the woods shut out most light.
"Flora", Aiden called out to his quickly advancing companion, "Let's light our lamps, they're attached to the packs." He started reaching for his "We'll need some light to see where we're going".
"Aiden! Maybe not, look".
Aiden looked up and saw that there was a growth on the tree trunks, fallen limbs, and even in the canopy above. Before he's even unhooked his lantern he'd stopped and stared in awe and the glow.
Flora stepped close to Aiden, showing him something glowing in her hands.
"See, Aiden, I just plucked this from a fallen limb. It's throwing off light!"
Aiden's heart thumped harder as Flora's cheek met his as they gawked.
The luminous fragment pulsed gently in Flora's hands, illuminating her features with an ethereal glow that banished the shadows dancing around them. Aiden's breath caught as he marveled at the tiny orb, its light alive and vibrant, casting an otherworldly hue on their surroundings. “It’s beautiful,” he whispered, unable to tear his gaze away from the warm radiance. Flora smiled, her eyes sparkling with excitement, and without warning, she tossed the glowing piece into the air. It floated like a firefly, darting between the trees and revealing glimpses of the hidden wonders around them—glimmering flowers with crystalline petals and strange, fluttering creatures that seemed to blend into the foliage.
